Supplements and Paleo Diet

When I first started to do the Paleo Diet, I read a lot of articles about taking supplements with the diet. Fish oil, iron, and vitamin C were just a few of the supplements that were recommended.  At the time, I was a little confused.  I thought, if the Paleo Diet followed the diet of our cavemen ancestors, then why should I take supplements? It’s not like they took supplements back then.  It didn’t even exist back then.

In Brad Tuttle’s article, We’ve Been Wasting a Ton of Money on Vitamins and Dietary Supplements, he states that “if you ate well, vitamins are unnecessary.”  He even goes to mention that women who take dietary supplements have higher that rates than those who don’t.  Tuttle advised to simply not assume that you or someone you love needs to take dietary supplements just by reading the promises on the bottles.  Instead, ask your doctor.

Well, I did.  Actually, a holistic doctor once told me that there are certain nutrients that our soil do not produce anymore due to all the chemicals that are used by farmers.  Now, I would have to agree to that as we are all familiar with how people overuse chemicals.  Knowing this, instead of taking supplements, I invested time in researching the food that was being sold locally in my town.  I also invested time learning more about nutrition, and all the sources that are available to me.

I know people that swear by their supplements.  For me, I’m just going by what our cavemen ancestors practiced.
