When you work in an office, you can’t avoid people coming in with donuts and croissants in the morning. Breakfast and snacks were the hardest for me to adjust to when I transitioned to the Paleo Diet & Lifestyle. I found this recipe from What’s That Smell‘s website. I was mainly attracted to the recipe because she talks about how she wanted a bread that wasn’t coconut-y, which is also what I wanted. I eat this bread for breakfast and a lot of times, for snacking as well. Enjoy!

CrossFit is a fitness program which focuses on high intensity exercises and total physical exertion in order to maximize muscle development to increase strength and

image from CrossfitHollywood.com

CrossFit is a fitness program which focuses on high intensity exercises and total physical exertion in order to maximize muscle development to increase strength and stamina. Exercises included in this program are short, normally a single workout would only take 20 minutes, but the exercise routines used are intensive. The CrossFit program has been one of the main physical curriculum in many law enforcement agencies and as a means of fitness routine for many police departments. It is also a favorite for many gym enthusiasts and body builders everywhere.

Included in the CrossFit program is proper diet and one of the most recommended types of diet is the caveman diet. This type of diet involves the total elimination of dairy products, processed foods, cereals and food rich in carbohydrates, especially grains. The main principle why these kinds of foods are not a part of the Paleo diet is because it is said not to be the original diet of humanity. This idea was first formulated as modern archaeological discovered that before man started to use agriculture, the original food of humans consist mainly of meats coming from animals and fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. This stage of human history is considered to be the hunter-gatherer stage.

Researchers have considered that as humans developed, the “original” constitution of the body is adapted to the so called paleo or caveman diet. It was only in the last few thousand years where agriculture was first developed and immerses humanity in a new form of diet which included cereals and grains which are high in carbohydrates.

Why is the Paleo diet recommended for people doing CrossFit?

The answer is the human biology. For thousands of years, the human structure has remained relatively the same. Since the emergence of Cro-magnon, the basic structure of the human body has not changed drastically. This will imply that the level of exercise needed by early humans in order to maintain health is the same requirements people must continue to this day. The level of exercise hunter gatherer humans receive is relatively intense compared to the modern lifestyle of most people today.

In order to maintain that primeval lifestyle early humans have and the level of exercise they receive, one must also consume the types of food which they ingest and it is a protein-based diet. This is the main characteristic of the paleo diet. It focuses on providing the body with protein in order to fuel an intensive exercise routine. This, as many paleo diet promoters say, will decrease the risk of high levels of cholesterol and increase in muscle development and stamina.

How can Paleo diet in combination of the CrossFit program maintain fitness?

In order to answer this question, we must need to be aware of the levels of exercise routines included in the Crossfit program. These routines are grouped into three main exercise categories. These three are weight exercises, distance movements and movements with weights. These three main exercise categories are included in the main Crossfit program. All of the exercise included in these categories are intensive, rigorous and will make sure that each routine will burn calories and cholesterol.

In order to maintain the energy needed in accomplishing such rigorous exercises, there is no other perfect diet to take than a high-protein diet. The high protein diet will make sure that energy needed is sufficiently provided through the proper combination of meats, vegetable and fruits which cannot be supplied by a high carb diet. The intensity of the exercises in the crossfit program will make sure that the protein and fat ingested are efficiently burned and used by the body. This will reduce any likelihood of cholesterol accumulation and weight problems.

The caveman diet is one of the most radical forms of dieting programs devised, however many are already claiming its effectiveness. One must always remember that the body can only maintain its health if used correctly. Any misuse will generally cause disease and discomfort. It is always the best way to get involved in exercise as much as possible as it is the best way to maintain good weight management and in the long run and long and healthy life.

Ingredients:

1 lb of raw almonds

4 cups of water

Directions

Drain the water and rinse the almonds again thoroughly.

Add the almonds and the water in a food processor or high speed blender.

Blend the nuts and water until very smooth.

Note:

Don’t forget to refrigerate in a glass container!

Is Sweet Potato Paleo friendly? A lot of people seem a bit confused about this, and I will admit, I was too. According to PaleoPlan.com, it is absolutely okay to eat sweet potatoes and the only time you really want to watch it is if you were trying to lose weight. This is something you want to eat in moderation, but the great thing about this is that it can satisfy your cravings for something sweet. So for this holiday season, here’s a great and easy sweet potato that you can enjoy with your family.

Ingredients

5-6 small Sweet Potatoes

1 tbsp Olive oil

1 large egg, lightly beaten

1 tsp grated ginger

1/2 tsp sea salt

2 wedges of lime

Cilantro leaves for garnish

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with foil. Lay the sweet potatoes and roast until they are tender. This will usually take about 50-55 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Once they are cool enough to touch, slice the potato skins open.

Scoop out flesh while leaving 1/2 inch thick layer inside the skins. Place the scooped out flesh in a bowl and return the skins on to the baking sheets.

Mash the sweet potato flesh with a fork. Once mashed, add the olive oil by stirring in slowly. The add the egg, ginger, and salt.

Beat together until smooth.

Spoon the filling back into the skins, and bake until the tops are puffed up and slightly golden brown. Approximately 25-30 minutes.

Sprinkle with cilantro and add lime if desired.

Serve and enjoy!

I actually purchased this Paleo diet recipe book from Amazon.com mainly because it had “over 200 grain free recipes for any occasion.” After being on the diet for a while now (or then), I knew that Paleo diet recipes usually consisted of ingredients that weren’t easy to find and methods that weren’t hard to do.

The book came in the mail two days after ordering it, and I was really excited when I read through the recipes. The book had amazing photos and as expected, the recipes were easy and did not require ingredients that I would have to buy at a fancy specialty or gourmet store. The book include a good amount of recipes for breakfast, appetizers, entrees, salads, soups, sauces, dressings, side dishes, and even treats such as cookies, pies, and ice creams.

The first recipe I tried was the grilled clams with garlic drizzle. I happen to have clams at the time and I was so excited on how easy it was to make the dish, and how great it turned out. I only need to sauté garlic in unsalted pasture butter, add the parsley, grill clams until they open up and drizzle the butter and garlic mixture. It was hit at home! We all loved it, and grilled clams with garlic drizzle became an instant favorite appetizer at home.

I have tried various other Paleo Diet recipe books out there, and this one is actually one of my favorites. It is usually the book I recommend to friends who are interested in doing the Paleo diet, because the book really do include appetizing recipes with appetizing photos. I think most people think that Paleo Diet means raw food or a beef leg. I have had friends who have purchased the book and tell me, “I didn’t know that beef with broccoli and steak with chimichurri were Paleo!” So, if you are tired of looking for recipes online and want a book in handy, you should get Make it Paleo (over 200 grain free recipes for any occasion). Get it here & enjoy!

Following the Paleo Diet was a bit challenging for me when it comes to my sweet cravings. I really did have a sweet tooth, and chocolate chip cookies were my ultimate favorite! There are a lot of recipes for Paleo cookies out there, and I had found that this recipe worked really well for me. I just love using almond butter! I also found that adding or replacing the chocolate chip with dried cranberries has worked well for me with this recipe.

Thank you Fuel Endurance Performance for this recipe!
